The Dangers of Doodling

Written by Frugal Libertarian on February 5, 2010 in: In the News |

Who knew that doodling on a desk at school was a crime worthy of handcuffs and arrest.  This is just another reason I will do everything in my power to make sure my children never set foot in a government school.

  • Common sense was not used in this instance. This should have been an issue for the school and not the school resource officer (SRO). It does amaze me the courts decided to assign, “eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she learned from the experience” and not just throw this out. This type of case didn’t belong in our court system.

It could be a case of not enough teachers and big classes where teachers don’t have the “time” to discipline, they turn it over to the SRO. I would argue this is not the norm at most government schools (aka public schools). If the local school isn’t doing the job, run for the school board–they are the governing board.

  • Here is a link from CNN.com that discusses this case: http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/02/18/new.york.doodle.arrest/index.html?hpt=C1

I do agree with the article, this could have been taken care of with a trip to the school office. 20 years ago that is what we did.

  • Running for the school board is not the answer to the problems of government schools. It is not how they are governed that I don’t like, it is that they are governed at all. I want to make the decisions about my child’s education. I have no moral right or desire to make those decisions for any other parent. Phasing out government schools completely and returning the money stolen from parents by taxation so they can choose what education is best for their child is the only answer.
Also, I would argue that this type of thing is becoming the norm. Almost every week I read something absurd like this in the news. I have never understood the Resource officer (even the name is stupid, a resource for what?) An armed enforcer of arbitrary government edicts roaming the halls seems to serve no other purpose but to remind us of the coercive nature of government schools.
