I Missed National Sandwich Day!

Written by Frugal Libertarian on November 5, 2008 in: Best Money Spent this Week |

I woke up this morning trying to look at the bright side.  Sure the Democrats now have control of both the Senate, House and the Presidency, but at least the Republicans have finally imploded.  I was planning on celebrating by having a big sandwich in honor of National Sandwich Day.  I could have swore that National Sandwich Day was November 5th.  I was going to write a post encouraging everyone to have a sandwich so I looked up National Sandwich Day just to be sure I had the date right and what do I find?  I missed it.  It is actually November 3rd.

My bright spot quickly faded, but then I decided that collectivism be damned.  Who needs a National Day for anything.  I love sandwiches and therefore I will celebrate them any day I feel like it.  So, today it is.  I have always said that all you really need in life is a good sandwich, a comfortable place to sit, and someone to share it all with.  I found out how true this really was while working in Antarctica for five months.  I had access to good sandwiches, but there was not a comfortable chair on the entire continent.

So, today I will sit in my recliner and eat a big sandwich.  It should be the best money I will spend all week. Maybe it will cheer me up.

Thirty Dollar Latte

Written by Frugal Libertarian on October 17, 2008 in: Best Money Spent this Week |

The best money I spent this week was the last $2.50 of the $30.00 it takes to earn a free latte at my favorite coffee shop.  Buy 12 and your 13th is on them.  I have been working towards the free latte for six months.  I try to limit my fancy coffe puchases since $2.50 is pretty steep for 12ozs of liquid.

Now, trying not to buy lattes at a coffee shop doesn’t mean I think drinking coffee in general is too expensive.   Being frugal is no reason to drink bad coffee or even tea for that matter, but buying good coffee or tea and making it at home can save you a bundle.  A one time investment in a good coffee grinder and a French Press is well worth it.  Plus, coffee and tea is really about the ritual, not the drink.

Anyway, I plan on saving my free latte for when I am low on cash.  I have a feeling it will be the best latte I have had in six months.

Carri’s Cookies

The best $.99 I spent this week was on a Snikerdoodle at QuickTrip. These cookies are made Lenexa Kansas. They are damn good. I have been trying to go cold turkey on junk food but I could not resist the other night on the way to work. I am glad I caved because it was the best thing I ate all week. I can not think of a better use for $.99.

Excersaucer

Ok. I am a few weeks behind on this one, but I had to share since this is by far the best $20 I have spent in months. I bought a Baby Einstein excersaucer on craigslist for my little girl. I was hoping for maybe 10 minutes of entertainment for her at a time. The first morning I put her in it she instantly went crazy playing with all the little toys attached to it. I was able to eat breakfast, pump, read the paper, take a shower, dry my hair, and get dressed all while she played. It was cheaper than a day of daycare. Of course the next morning she only played in the excersaucer for 10 minutes before crying and needing me, her favorite toy. But, that one morning was more than worth the $20. The best part; since baby paraphernalia keeps its value I will be able to resell it on craigslist when she is done with it for $20. Child entertainment is great, free child entertainment is even better.
